Another way to do stranded colorwork is to combine the American and Continental methods of holding the yarn. Hold the working yarn in your right hand, and the unused yarn in your left hand until it is needed. This makes it easier to keep the two yarns from twisting together as you switch colors. It also allows you to “weave” the unused yarn into the purl side of the knitting. Whichever way you hold the yarn, be careful to keep the tension on the stranded yarns very loose. If the strands are two tight, you will get puckers on the front side of the finished piece.

Skip the next three stitches and pass behind the next stitch. Repeat from the asterisk across the knitting, unthreading the needle and leaving the end loose at the end. Repeat every 4 rows along the section to be smocked, then gather the knitting by pulling the ends of the threads until the knitting is snuggly gathered together. Tie each pair of threads into a knot to hold the gathering in place. 3. The smocking stitches can be worked in the same yarn used for knitting or in a contrasting yarn or decorative thread.

Buttonhole or Blanket Stitch This traditional edging stitch can also be used as a decorative element. When the stitches are close together they form buttonhole stitch, and sewing them farther apart forms a blanket stitch. Begin with the yarn coming out on the left side of a knit stitch. Insert the needle one or two knit stitches away to the right, catching the yarn in the stitch as you pull the stitch into place. Open Cretan Stitch This easy decorative stitch is fun to work on knitting because the knitted stitches are like a grid helping you make the embroidered stitches even.
